VISION FOR THE MSEA PROFESSIONAL LEARNING PORTAL (PLP)

MSEA is the largest union in Maryland and represents educators throughout Maryland — certificated, non-certificated, administrators, retirees, aspiring educators, and higher education. MSEA believes in the power of learning and professionally developing all educators. MSEA’s Center for Education Policy and Practice (CEPP) strives to be ever-evolving and relevant by supporting members to achieve their desired learning goals via a user-friendly, on-demand learning portal that offers high-quality, free/discounted coursework, and self-paced professional development opportunities that are accessible anywhere, any time. As we launch this learning solutions/management platform, our goal is to equip our diverse membership with the necessary materials and resources essential to supplement their professional development needs, build policy comprehension, and address practice changes. We aim to aid to promote relevancy, cultural responsiveness, and facilitate the formation of customized learning strategies which impact students and learning outcomes.

Welcome to MSEA’s Professional Learning Portal (PLP)! The PLP is an exciting platform for MSEA members like you to take advantage of MSEA’s online professional development to learn and share with your colleagues.

As educators, we’re lifelong learners, seeking out new skills and always honing our craft. And no matter our job title, we’re also lifelong educators, eager to share our expertise with others. Our PLP provides the opportunity to do both.
While you’re here, you can engage in learning opportunities to receive a certificate for Continuing Professional Development and earn graduate credits. You can also find information and next steps that will help you grow as a professional. We have an ever-growing range of topics and trainings for you to explore and dive into.

And know that we’re here to support you every step of the way. No matter your job classification or where you are in your career, your professional association is here to help you on your journey as an educator.

We offer courses, events, and conferences on a multitude of topics. As a member benefit, we are here to support your professional growth. We also partner with local affiliates and Local School Systems (LSSs) to bring professional development to our locals. We will work together with your local affiliate and LSS toward a common strategic goal to reinforce professional development plans.

We know that:

High-quality teaching, leadership, and support professionals are some of the most significant factors tied to student achievement and success.
Professional development is effective when it contains authentic and relevant curriculum content, is intensive, ongoing, connected to practice, and focused on student learning.

A growing body of research and practice indicates that effective professional development improves both the content knowledge of teachers in core academic areas and the teaching practices of all educators. It also strengthens the learning that supports principals in becoming outstanding educational leaders.

Member surveys identified a need for personalized professional development/growth for education support professionals, teachers, and specialists that promotes student achievement and guides students to become global citizens, while supporting members' professional growth. Surveys also identified a need for professional development tailored to the specific roles and responsibilities of administrators and other educator leaders.

As we evolve as an organization, we will utilize feedback from our membership and research the best practices they use in accomplishing/to accomplish our education goals.

The purpose of the MSEA Center for Education Policy and Practice is to educate, elevate, and empower members’ ability to support and prepare diverse students by providing high-quality policy guidance and professional development support.

● To understand how the expertise of our members influences our organization’s growth.
● To keep up-to-date with current research on national and international trends in public education in order to create and advance equitable policies.
● To foster relationships with diverse stakeholders, organizations, and government agencies, and ensure transparency, as well as accountability for promoting equitable educational outcomes.
● To elevate the professional expertise of educators by designing and implementing high-quality professional development to facilitate change and meet the needs of a diverse student population.
