MSEA and NEA view advanced, voluntary certification as a significant part of long-standing efforts to enhance standards for the teaching profession. National Board Certification (NBC), a symbol of commitment to excellence in the teaching profession is a nationally recognized advanced teaching credential for effective and accomplished teachers. The program encompasses national standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do. The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) certifies teachers who successfully complete its rigorous certification process.
The landmark Blueprint for Maryland’s Future added a career ladder pathway that includes the National Board Certification process. Teachers, as defined by the law, who achieve National Board Certification are eligible for a salary increase and expanded leadership opportunities.
