National Board Certification Program

MSEA and NEA view advanced, voluntary certification as a significant part of long-standing efforts to enhance standards for the teaching profession. National Board Certification (NBC), a symbol of commitment to excellence in the teaching profession is a nationally recognized advanced teaching credential for effective and accomplished teachers. The program encompasses national standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do. The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) certifies teachers who successfully complete its rigorous certification process.

The landmark Blueprint for Maryland’s Future added a career ladder pathway that includes the National Board Certification process. Teachers, as defined by the law, who achieve National Board Certification are eligible for a salary increase and expanded leadership opportunities.

To support candidates attempting to meet this rigorous standard, MSEA regularly offers Jump Start training sessions that guide educators through the process of National Board Certification. While the primary Jump Start Seminars are held in September and January, additional webinars and seminars are offered throughout the year and summer. MSEA Convention Workshops

Come and join MSEA at our annual Convention Workshops! Every October, in conjunction with the annual MSEA Fall Representative Assembly, MSEA offers our members and the community a wide range of timely, innovative, and practical workshops led by experts in multiple areas of interest. Convention workshops focus on personal and professional concepts and strategies that can be employed immediately, either at work or in your community or home. From learning how to manage stress and finances with NEA Member Benefits, to the newest ideas on student learning, our workshops are led by leaders in the field and are consistently rated as excellent by participants. MSEA-NEA Microcredentials

MSEA-NEA Microcredentials are grounded in research and best practice and designed to be: personalized, flexible, and competency-based. A micro-credential is a short, competency-based recognition that allows an educator to demonstrate mastery in a particular area. You can choose courses that fit your schedule, personality, and professional growth needs. Link to MSEA-NEA Microcredentials site.

NEA works in close partnership with Digital Promise on micro-credential development. Digital Promise has built an ecosystem of more than 400 micro-credentials covering a wide variety of topics and skills to personalize learning for educators. Access Digital Promise Microcredentials here.

NEA has partnered with Citizen U®, as part of the Barat Education Foundation Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) program grant, to develop a series of micro-credentials. These micro-credentials, developed in conjunction with other TPS Consortium members, are designed to help educators better integrate inquiry learning with primary sources into instruction across grades and disciplines using a variety of frameworks and strategies. Attendees receive a certificate of completion that can be added to professional portfolio or presented to local human resources for potential clock hours. Microcredentials do not automatically award CPD credits; please check with your human resources department before enrolling in Microcredentials. Some microcredentials award a digital badge once you have earned it.
